  1. Paragraphs two and three establish the tone by saying that space travel is the future and it will be possible one day to travel to Mars. One word the expresses this idea is "space-faring civilization" another word that expresses this idea is "multi-planet species".
  2. The author explains the need to go to mars by saying "there will be some eventual extinction event. " This statement is intended to convince people that the world is going to end and in order to keep living we must move to another planet. This affects the tone of the article by creating a scary but dreary type of tone.
  3. The word choice that the author uses affects the tone by, using optimistic words and showing the reader that space travel can be accomplished successfully. The meaning of the text is affected in a similar fashion, due to the fact that The meaning is also pertaining to space travel.
  4.  The author develops the idea that space travel is necessary by saying that "there will be some eventual extinction event." this shows that according to the author we will be forced to leave Earth. The other idea, that space travel will become more affordable, can be supported by the statement "The SpaceX goal is to reduce that cost by roughly four and a half orders of magnitude to around $200,000 per ton." This shows that their plan is to make space travel affordable in the future.
  5. One technology that has the ability to reduce the cost of space travel is, refilling in orbit this will allow the rockets to carry less fuel and therefore become more efficient. Another technology is producing propellant or fuel on mars, instead of bringing it from Earth, which can be very costly.
